Gay and Lesbain Elderly: "I began this series of photographs of older gay and lesbians because I wanted to create beautiful and dignified portraits of this segment of America. Our culture is so consumed by its worship of youth that often we fail to see anything else. Just as gay and lesbian people have long felt invisible by the larger culture, so too are elderly gay men and women often ignored by younger members of the community."
Pier 45 (a look at the gay subculture at New York's west side Piers): "My intention throughout this project has been to convey the unique character of this urban space as well as the faces which populate it: dog walkers and joggers, drag queens and dropouts, muscle boys on roller blades, homeless veterans, Stonewall survivors, elderly couples out for a Sunday stroll, sunbathers, and curious tourists -- black and white, rich and poor, gay and straight, and every category in between."
Madison Avenue (portraits and street scenes of shoppers along this avenue in New York City's wealthiest neighborhoods): "I made several of these portraits on the sidewalks of the avenue with a large, wooden 8x10 view camera, the others I made with a 35mm camera. When I approach people to ask if they would be willing to pose for me, I am variously met with refusal, aloof complicity, or outright enthusiasm."
Housing is Healthcare (a series of photos from programs across the country that provide housing for homeless people with HIV/AIDS): "These images are a tribute to the partnership between four housing providers and the HIV-positive, multiply diagnosed clients they serve. Departing from usual portraits of clients and providers, these photographs are portraits of spaces in which persons with AIDS are housed and recieve services. Many of these images capture attempts homeless persons have made to transform institutional space into personal places, thus revealing a sense of the individual even though she or he is absent."
The site also features travel images from China, Japan, Italy, France, Brazil, Puerto Rico, India and Nepal. Portraits include such celebrities as Sandra Bernhardt, Ross Bleckner, Quentin Crisp, Lypsinka, Patti Smith, & Judy Shepard.
